TANZANIA | BACKGROUND

Just1Life’s Tanzanian University Scholarship Scheme was started in 2016, and currently eight scholars are studying a range of subjects at university level. The Just1Life Scholarship Scheme assists the students with their tuition fees and expenses. Just1Life started the Tanzanian scheme through contacts at the Mvumi School and the Mvumi School Trust in Tanzania. The Mvumi School is a large secondary school with almost 500 students, located 36km from Dodoma. It also has specialist facilities for blind and visually impaired students.

The Just1Life Tanzanian programme is in its first year, and has got off to an excellent start. All of Just1Life’s scholars had received admission to universities in Tanzania, but did not have the financial means to pay the fees and associated costs of attendance. All of the students have excellent motivation and the desire to achieve good results at university. Their courses include Chemistry, Tax Management, Water Management & Engineering, and Maths. We look forward to expanding the scheme over the next few years.

In the student’s own words: ‘The best thing about first semester is that I got the chance to learn many things about computers, and meet with different people with different knowledge.

My biggest success in academic studies is that I have succeeded and completed all topics in all courses. We have already done the tests, now we are waiting for the university examinations. My favourite activity is debates with my fellow students; also to refresh my mind by watching movies, and to do exercise like playing netball. My academic goal for 2017 is to get a first class, with a 4.4-5.0 GPA.

In the student’s own words: ‘The best thing about first semester is that l am interested in this university, because teachers are teaching very well and are on time so I love it!

My biggest success so far in academics is that I have tried to do well in the different courses that I am taking this semester. My favourite activity as a university student are practical programs for computers, as we get to know many things which are applicable to our societies. I also like singing, as I am a choir member. My personal academic goal for this year is to get a good GPA so that I will be able to go to the next level, that is to become a second year student. My Just1Life sponsors: I would like to tell you that I am very thankful for your help, and I would like you to know that I will try to my best to do well in my studies, so that I won’t let you down’.

In the student’s own words: ‘The best thing about first semester at university is the social life, of course in addition to the studies itself!

My biggest success so far in academic studies up to now, is that I have a good and high knowledge of using computers and most of their applications. The biggest challenge as a new university student is the difficulty of my university, but I study hard so as to cope with it. My personal academic goal for 2017 is to pursue higher academic grades during my first semester. Something else that my Just One Life sponsors in UK might be interested in: I am likely to take my second degree (Masters) in the UK, in the field of medicinal chemistry.
